Chart News: Katy Perry Ties Michael Jackson Singles Record

Katy Perry is the first woman, and second artist to have five #1 singles from ONE album top Billboard’s Hot 100, as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” becomes the fifth consecutive chart topper from her third studio album, Teenage Dream.

Last Friday Night” follows the album’s prior #1’s “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg),” the title track, “Firework“; and, “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West).”   “California Gurls” spent six weeks atop the Hot 100 last summer, followed by a two-week stint at the top from the album’s title track. “Firework” led the chart for four weeks in December, while “E.T.” featuring Kanye West landed in the top spot for five weeks in April.

Teenage Dream entered Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart at #1 last September, and has sold 1.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

While Perry is the first woman to achieve this feat, she is the second artist to obtain five #1 singles from a single album after Michael Jackson. The late icon sent five songs to #1 on the Hot 100 from Bad between 1987-88: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” (with Siedah Garrett); the title track; “The Way You Make Me Feel“; “Man in the Mirror“; and, “Dirty Diana.”
