After making Adele’s 21 play runner-up last week, can Lionel Richie fend off Jason Mraz for No. 1 next week on the Billboard 200 albums chart?
In its third week on the chart, Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee climbs to No.1 on Billboard’s Top 200, keeping Adele’s 21 from claiming its 24th week at the top.
Last week, industry insiders predicted Adele’s 21 to reclaim the Top 200, but Richie’s sales surged during the weekend, thanks to his CBS special “ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends in Concert.” The all-star special garnered 7.7 million viewers, and was the most-watched show of the night. Selling 129,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Tuskegee becomes Richie’s third No. 1 album, and his first since 1986’s Dancing on the Ceiling spent two weeks atop the chart.
Elsewhere on the chart….
Adele’s 21 holds at No. 2 with 92,000 while last week’s No.1, Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, falls to No. 3 with 81,000 copies. Monica’s New Life starts at No. 4 with 69,000, becoming her fifth consecutive top five debut. All her releases have reached the top ten of the Top 200, except her 1995 debut, Miss Thang, which opened at No. 36. She hit No. 1 once, with 2003’s After the Storm.
One Direction’s Up All Night stays at No. 5 with 66,000 while industry vet Bonnie Raitt makes a splash at No.6 with Slipstream, selling 64,000. The set is her highest-charting album and posts her best sales week in nearly two decades. Following his performance on Saturday Night Live, Gotye’s Making Mirrors flies back to the top 10 (15-7) with 54,000. This is the best sales week yet for the album, coming one week after it lodged its highest frame (26,000).
