New Music| Teairra Mari – ‘Lil Mama’

Those waiting for Teairra Mari’s much-delayed sophomore album, Sex on the Radio, will have to wait a little longer. The former “Princess of the Roc” will release a mixtape, Unfinished Business, on July 4 as a prelude to her second full-length disc. The mixtape’s lead single premiered today.

“She ain’t messing with no zeros/ He only want it with them dimes/ She ain’t looking for no hero/ Her daddy do it big time,” she sings on the Rico Love-produced single, “Lil Mama.”

Teairra Mari’s union with Rico Love and his Division 1 imprint has yet to impress. When you’re signed to arguably the hottest songwriter in R&B, why are you giving away free music; and why is the music, for lack of a better word, trash?  I’m STILL confused to why “Motivation” wasn’t given to Teairra over Kelly Rowland. There’s no doubt that Kelly needed a hit and did a GREAT job with the track, BUT…if I have a female artist signed to MY label in desperate need of a hit, she would have had first dibs on any smash written for a female artist. The same can be said for “Mr. Wrong,” which ended up getting lost on Mary J. Blige’s My Life II..The Journey Continues (Act I).

And what’s the deal with all these mixtapes? I can understand one to reintroduce yourself to the fans, but damn. Unfinished Business will be her fourth mixtape since 2009, not to mention, 2010’s Sincerely Yours EP. All this free and discounted music and no full-length album? Jesus be a fence.

Video| Teairra Mari featuring 2 Chainz – ‘U Did That’

Teairra Mari serves sex in the recession-friendly video for “U Did That” featuring  2 Chainz, the Rico Love-penned lead single from her oft-delayed sophomore album. The former “Princess of the Roc” gets inside her boyfriend’s mind with hips, f-ck faces and a (surprisingly believable) sexy dance number.

I’m still questioning why Teairra Mari wasn’t given “Motivation” — you’d think being signed to Rico Love’s Division 1 label, she’d be first in line for any and all hits written by the talented songwriter.  There’s no denying that Kelly Rowland did a great job with the track, but damn, Rico, you could’ve gave your artist some heat. By comparison, “Motivation” is porn with the money shot while “U Did That” falls somewhere between Cinemax after 10 o’clock and a picture book with different positions. See where I’m going with this?

Despite being treated like a bastard stepchild and dropped from Def Jam on the night of her prom, Teairra Mari has continued to push for her career. I can respect that. Unfortunately, one-dimensional tracks like “U Did That” and poorly executed music video aren’t going to get it done. We’ll have to wait and see how her affiliation with Rico Love pans out — so far they are 0-1 for me.

New Music: Usher featuring Rick Ross – ‘Lemme See’

Less than a week after releasing pop-flavored “Scream,” Usher pleases his urban audience with “Lemme See” featuring Rick Ross.

The Jim Jonsin production, co-written by singer-songwriter Eric Bellinger, incorporates elements of Kelly Rowland’sMotivation.”  Even with the familiar sound, Usher takes center stage on the seductive cut, displaying his killer falsetto, while Rick Ross comes through midway with a hot verse.

The sexy tune is the third release from Usher’s seventh studio album Looking For Myself, which hits stores and online retailers June 12. “Lemme See” arrives on iTunes May 8.
