Trey Songz Reveals ‘Chapter 5’ Release Date


Trey Songz took to Instagram to announce the release date for his new album, Chapter 5. The follow-up to 2010’s Passion, Pain & Pleasure arrives August 21 via Songbook/Atlantic Records.

The album is preceded by “Heart Attack,” the lead single, which cracked the top five on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week.  “2 Reasons” featuring T.I., the second single, is expected to premiere in the coming days. Lil Wayne, Big Sean, J. Cole, and Kelly Rowland are among the artists featured on Chapter 5.

Usher covers Billboard, talks blending genres on ‘Looking 4 Myself’


Usher takes the cover of this week’s issue of Billboard.  The multi-platinum singer talks about his blending genres on his new album, prepping for his role as Sugar Ray Leonard in the Roberto Duran biopic Hands of Stone, with Robert De Niro, and more.

Described as a “fusion of electro-soul, old-school R&B and modern club anthems,” Usher looks to expand his audience with Looking 4 Myself, his seventh studio album, due June 12. “Electronic music has given me a new story,” he says, “a new opportunity to build something I think a mass audience will understand.”

The album’s lead single, “Climax,” currently sits at No. 18 on the Hot 100, and No. 1 for a third week on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.   “He gave us messages like, ‘We’re going to bring the strip club to the stadium.’ His references were crazy; he was bringing up Monsters of Folk, Little Dragon and all kinds of things. He makes big, giant pop records but he is also a huge fan of everything,” Diplo, who produced “Climax,” says.

Usher’s ‘Climax’ Tops R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart


Usher scores his 12th No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally, as “Climax” rises 2-1 with 31 million audience impressions in its ninth week.

“Climax” extends Usher’s lead for the most No. 1s on the chart during the Nielsen Music era (since December 1992). The Diplo-produced cut also marks his No. 1 on RCA, following his two-decade affiliation with LaFace which dissolved into RCA last year.  “Climax’s” ascension to the throne ends the seven-week reign of Beyoncé’s “Love On Top” as it falls1-3.

Rihanna’s musical reunion with Chris Brown, “Birthday Cake,” holds at No. 2; while Drake’s former No. 1 “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne, remains at No. 4, and LoveRance’s “UP!” bullets again at No. 5.

Kirko Bangz’ “Drank in My Cup” moves 7-6; Chris Brown’s “Strip” slides to No.7, and “Another Round,” which he assists Fat Joe, stays at No.8 with a 15% gain.  Travis Porter earn their first top 10 with the Tyga-assisted “Ayy Ladies,” which scores the Greatest Gainer/Airplay tag with a 12-9 boost (19 million, up 20%).

Rounding out the top 10, Young Jeezy lands his eighth top 10, as “Leave You Alone” featuring Ne-Yo, rises 11-10 with a 16% airplay increase.

Beyoncé Scores 18th No.1 Single with ‘Love on Top’


Beyoncé lands her 18th No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Club Play Songs chart as “Love on Top” rises 4-1 this week.  “Love on Top’s” ascension moves her within one of Janet Jackson (19) for the seond-most leaders in the chart’s 35-year history (and pushing her past Rihanna, who has 17), according to Billboard.

Elsewhere,  “Top” secures its fifth week at No. 1 with 35 million listener impressions on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and sits at No. 26 on the Radio Songs list.  The song, co-written and co-produced by KnowlesThe-Dream and Shea Taylor, falls 54-58 on the Hot 100 this week. Prior to its release as the fourth single from 4, “Love on Top” debuted and peaked on the Hot 100 at No. 20, following Bey’s performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

The song has sold 635,766 downloads.

Beyoncé Scores First Adult R&B No. 1 with “Love on Top”


“Finally you put my love on top!” 


While Drake continues his reign on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne, it’s Beyoncé’sLove on Top” making headlines this week.  Rising 4-2, “Top” earns the Greatest Gainer/Airplay award with 30 million audience impressions, up 22%, according to Billboard.  Elsewhere, “Love on Top” becomes the 16-time Grammy-winner’s first No. 1 song on the Adult R&B radio chart, where it dethrones Robin Thicke’sLove After War” after a three-week reign.  Back on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, her former No. 2 hit “Party” featuring André 3000 rebounds 10-8 in its 34th week.

Co-written by Knowles, The-Dream and Shea Taylor, “Love on Top” is the fourth single from her latest album, 4, which has sold 1,135,700 copies as of Feb. 2012.
