Bobby Brown Says He’s ‘Not the Reason’ Whitney Houston’s Gone

In his first interview since Whitney Houston’s death, Bobby Brown dispels the longstanding rumor that he introduced her to drugs.

“I’m not the reason she’s gone,” he said of his ex-wife in the new interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, which airs on TODAY on Wednesday and Thursday. “I didn’t get high before I met Whitney … I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all.”

He also says he’s “hurt” by the news that cocaine played a factor in her death. “I didn’t know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know– listen, it’s a hard fight. It’s a hard fight to, you know, maintain sobriety that way,” he said.

Brown and Houston married on July 28, 1992, and welcomed their daughter Bobbi Kristina in 1993. After years of negative press and personal turmoil, they filed for divorce in 2006.

Whitney Houston’s death was officially ruled an accidental drowning last month.  The global superstar died the day before the Grammy Awards at age 48.
